drawing vs Drawing

Today I give you two versions of the same subject. The first was done in a couple of hours in my sketchbook, and the other was a piece I worked on for several days. Now you might ask yourself, "Why didn't he draw it like that the first time?" Great question. Now, here's the reason.

The first is a study. Just getting my head around the look and beauty of the lion. We all "know" what lions look like, but we must forget that to make a Drawing that looks like the subject. Don’t draw what you remember of the subject but draw what you’re seeing. If you do, you will draw the idea, not what is on the reference material.

Lessons learned:

  • The eyes were not correct
  • The chin was too long
  • The face was too long
  • The mouth wasn't quite right

Look objectively at your art. Understand where you have succeeded and where you can do better. That will change your drawing into a Drawing.
